Avocado trees produce many flowers in clusters, but only one in a thousand will become a fruit. The flowers open in two stages, first as a female flower and then as a male, to prevent self-fertilization. Avocado trees grown from seed take about five years to produce their first harvest, and about 50 fruits. Grafted trees produce fruit in the first two years.
