Castor oil is a viscous, non-volatile, pale yellow fatty oil extracted from the seeds of the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis). It is known for its high ricinoleic acid content, which gives it unique properties, including its use as a powerful laxative. While primarily known for this medicinal use, castor oil is also an important industrial raw material used in cosmetics, paints, varnishes, and lubricants. It is largely insoluble in water but miscible with ethanol and ether.
