Ginger is the spicy, aromatic underground rhizome (stem) of the Zingiber officinale herbaceous perennial plant. Native to Southeast Asia, the plant features annual leafy shoots with a pungent, branching rhizome that is valued as a spice and for its medicinal properties, owing to compounds called gingerols. It is a member of the Zingiberaceae family, which also includes turmeric and cardamom.
