Risa (traditional Tripuri Attire)

The Risa is a handwoven cloth, part of the traditional attire of Tripuri women in Tripura, India. It functions primarily as an upper garment, covering the chest. Beyond this, it is also used as a headgear, a stole, or a ceremonial gift expressing respect. It holds cultural and religious importance, with adolescent girls receiving their first Risa in a coming-of-age ceremony called Risa Sormani. The Risa features vibrant, intricate designs and patterns, often inspired by nature and mythology, reflecting the unique identity of each of the 19 indigenous Tripuri tribes. It also plays a role in religious festivals like Garia Puja and can be used in various other ways, such as a turban, cummerbund, headscarf, muffler, or even a makeshift baby carrier.
